Covid-19 infections mostly happen at work and at school, research shows

People contract Covid-19 mainly at work and at school, according to an investigation by the Flemish Care and Health Agency relayed Thursday by Het Laatste Nieuws.

There was an average of 509.71 coronavirus infections per day in Belgium between 31 August and 6 September, an increase of 15% compared to the previous seven-day period, according to the latest figures published by Sciensano. Hospitalisations also rose again (+4.6%) to an average of 20.7 per day.

According to the Flemish Care and Health Agency, an analysis of contacts and sources of infection shows that there is a direct link between these rising figures and the start of the school year and the revival of businesses after the summer holidays.

The Agency also pointed out that the much-criticised contact tracing of infected persons is working better and better. Between 28 August and 3 September, 88% of Covid-19 patients in the north of the country could be contacted. On average, they provided data from four people they came into contact with.

The arrival of a mobile tracing application is nonetheless eagerly awaited. The app, Coronalert, is currently in a beta testing phase.
