US coronavirus diagnoses hit 112,000 as 7,681 more people test positive in New York

The United States now has more than 112,000 coronavirus diagnoses after 7,681 more people tested positive for Covid-19 overnight.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the update Saturday, with the US surging far ahead of Italy and China as the country with the most coronavirus diagnoses in the world.

He said that another 209 people had died of Covid-19 overnight, with New York now suffering a total of 728 deaths caused by the virus.

That number also brought the total number of people killed across the United States to 1,920. Governor Cuomo said: ‘Most (of those killed) had underlying illnesses but that does not make it feel any better.

‘These are still people we lost. If they did not have the virus they would be with us today.’

The State of New York now has 52,318 coronavirus patients, 7,328 of whom are in hospital with Covid-19. It is by far the worst-affected US state, with New Jersey the next most infected state, suffering 8,825 diagnoses.

New York’s number has also rocketed thanks to an intensive testing regime to try and establish the scale of the crisis, with 155,000 people tested there so far. Of those hospitalized, 1,755 are in intensive care.

Cuomo revealed that 2,726 patients who tested positive for coronavirus have since been discharged, an increase of 681 overnight. Governor Cuomo said Saturday that the temporary 1,000 bed hospital at Manhattan’s Javits Center would open Monday.

He said scientific models estimate that New York will reach the ‘apex’ of the virus in about 14-21 days, when the number of people infected and dying is set to peak. He added: ‘This is not a sprint. This is a marathon.

We are all working our way through it and we have to figure out a way to get through it.’ The US Navy’s hospital ship the Comfort is also set to dock in Manhattan that day, and will treat patients with other illnesses while hospitals deal with the anticipated surge of Covid-19 patients.

Cuomo also revealed that 1,100 coronavirus patients are being given an experimental mixture of anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and antibiotic azythromycin, to see whether it works as an effective treatment against coronavirus.
