Many Feared Killed As Plane Crashes In Congo

A passengers plane with about 17 passengers on board Sunday crashed in the city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The office of the provincial governor confirmed the crash.

It was learnt that the plane crash resulted in several deaths.

The plane, operated by the company Busy Bee, crashed during takeoff for a flight to the city of Beni, North Kivu, Reuters reports.

The Dornier-228 aircraft had been headed for Beni, 350 kilometres (220 miles) north of Goma when it went down in a residential area near Goma airport, an official said.

“There were 17 passengers on board and two crew members. It took off around 9-9.10 am (0700 GMT),” Busy Bee airline staff member Heritier Said Mamadou said.

One of the company’s maintenance workers at the site blamed a “technical problem”.

Meanwhile, as at time of this report, the number of fatalities was not yet clear.
