Mr Stephen Onoja, Director of Fishery, Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture, has urged residents in Enugu State to embrace fish farming as a business.
Onoja gave the advice in Enugu on Thursday.
According to him, fish farming business is a lucrative venture for anyone who owns a fish pond, irrespective of size of the pond he or she has or wishes to have.
The director noted that though fish farming was not a common business in the state, few people that ventured into it had been making brisk business.
Onoja said that during the 2018 South-East Zone fish show in Enugu,Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment promised to work out plans on how to get license fish farmers in the zone.
The director expressed optimism that the license would help the fish farmers to start exporting their fishes to European countries, adding that fish was highly demanded in most European markets.
He also said that with the help of license for exporting fish, fish farmers would make much profit and increase their products.
The director, however, advised fish pond owners to be consistence in the feeding pattern of their fishes.
“Any interruption in the feeding pattern of the fishes in ponds will affect their growth as their feeds come in different pellet.
“The size of the fish depends on the pellet of the feeding, which means that fishes are fed according to their sizes,” he said.
